Young Carers

A Young Carer is a child under 18 who regularly helps to look after a family member or friend who is disabled, ill, has a mental health condition or addiction problem.

Children may engage in:

  • Practical tasks (cooking, housework and shopping)
  • Physical care (lifting or helping someone use the stairs)
  • Personal care (dressing, washing, helping with toilet needs)
  • Managing the family budget (collecting benefits and prescriptions)
  • Managing medication
  • Looking after younger siblings
  • Helping someone communicate

Wootton Academy can support young carers.

We understand that caring for a family member can impact attendance, punctuality, attainment, ability to complete homework as well as the physical and emotional impact on a young person. We can support the Young Carer in school and sign post to other support such as Young Carers in Bedford and the School Nurse Service.

If you, or a family member, needs support please contact Mrs Thomas Young Carers School Operational Lead on 01234 767123 or email youngcarers@wootton.beds.sch.uk Alternatively you can speak to Mr Rutter our Young Carers Senior Leadership Team Lead on the same contact details. All contact will be treated in the strictest confidence.
